Data Protection Officer (part time or full time)

at Monzo

We are looking for a forward-thinking and hands-on Data Protection Officer to ensure that we are compliant, transparent, fair and customer-centric with how we use the data we have about our customers.

Monzo is an exciting combination of bank and tech start-up, started from scratch in February 2015 to build a bank you’d be proud to call your own. We’re focused on solving problems rather than selling financial products, making your financial life simpler and giving you complete control from your smartphone. We’re at the start of our journey to serve a billion people and we’ve made some good progress. We have over 200 staff, half a million lovely customers and a UK banking licence.

We’ve recently launched our current account which means that all of our customers are trusting us to protect large amounts of their personal data. We will be completely transparent about how we treat this data and want our community to be involved in these decisions: this is where you come in.

You’ll be responsible for defining how Monzo uses customer data. You’ll help apply the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and work with various teams to ensure Monzo are protecting data appropriately, following the spirit and letter of the GDPR. We want you to ensure our customers are kept up to date with how we use their data, from publishing a Data Charter, interacting with our community and being the data champion for Monzo.

We operate a “three lines of defence” model of risk management at Monzo: you’ll be sitting in the second line as part of our Risk and Compliance team, currently seven person strong. You will report directly to our Chief Risk Officer, and will work with teams across the company, from Marketing to Partnerships to Customer Operations and more. Your mission is to build a positive data protection culture, making it part of every Monzonaut’s day to day work.

What you’ll be doing:

-Defining and implementing the strategy for how Monzo uses data, including presenting proposals to senior executives.

-Supporting teams across the company to ensure we give due attention to data protection during design and development.

-Managing any potential or actual data breaches, including ensuring the Information Commissioner’s Office is informed if required.

-Championing data protection, giving advice and guidance across the company to make sure requirements are met and impacts are assessed.

You should apply if:

-You’re laser focused on the customer and willing to push for their best interests

-You’re self-motivated, focussed on executing well, and at your best with a mission and the freedom to execute to your own plan

-You care about how a company treats customer data and believe an integral, transparent approach is both ideal and fully achievable

-You should be an expert in data protection law and practices

-Ideally you have a background in compliance or law

-You’re curious about how technology will change the future of data protection

-What we’re doing at Monzo excites you!

Previous experience working in financial services (for example insurance, banking, consultancy) would be an advantage, but not a requirement.
